Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP)
This is group therapy for patients who abuse or are dependent on
alcohol or drugs or patients who have psychiatric issues or patients
who have both substance abuse issues and psychiatric issues.
These groups are held 5:30PM-8:30PM on Monday,
Tuesday, and Thursday nights for approximately five weeks. There are
two tracks - one for patients with psychiatric issues and one for
patients with substance abuse/dependence issues. Two nights of the
program involve only the patient going to group therapy and one
night involves the patient and his or her family or significant
other (if available) going to group therapy.
In this program the patient is assigned a licensed or
license eligible therapist. The patient and the therapist work to
establish an individualized plan of treatment and identify problems,
set goals, and recognize individual assets and liabilities in
developing steps to meet their goals. This therapist also works the
patient and the family to address the recovery needs and direction
for both the patient and the family.
Program Philosophy and Mission
The mission of the Intensive Outpatient Program is to
provide high quality individualized treatment. Fundamental to the
philosophy of the program are the disease concept of addiction and
the treatment of psychological disorders. Recovery from psychiatric
issues can result from a dynamic of successful experience in a
drug-free and emotionally stable lifestyle. The top three priorities
of this program are to be educational, insightful, and experiential.
The philosophy of a 12 step program is part of the therapeutic
setting.
Attention is given to providing assistance in
reconstructing a patient's life physically, emotionally,
spiritually, and vocationally. Staff attempt to address these needs
directly or through the referral process.
Program Description
In the Intensive Outpatient Program each patient is
provided the best professional care. A licensed therapist supervises
the program and directs the care of patients. An outpatient
therapist evaluates each patient and the patient is encouraged to
bring his/her significant other to the interview. After a no
charge assessment is completed and a therapist evaluates the
patient, the therapist and the patient discuss the patient's
appropriateness for the Intensive Outpatient Program. If appropriate
and the patient meets the criteria for the Intensive
Outpatient Program, then the patient can be admitted to the Intensive
Outpatient Program.
A patient can be admitted directly to the Intensive
Outpatient Program or they can be admitted as a step-down from the
Acute or Partial Hospitalization Program at Parkwood.
