Community: Mental Health Tips - Warning Signs


Depression

  • Noticeable change in eating habits.

  • Sleep too much or can’t sleep at night.

  • Loss of interest in things once enjoyed.

  • Loss of energy, fatigue.

  • Feelings of worthlessness, guilt.

  • Using alcohol or drugs to feel better.

  • Recurring thoughts of death or suicide; wishing to die.

  • Overwhelming feeling of sadness or hopelessness, uncontrolled crying.

  • Chronic negativism, feeling irritable.

  • Trouble concentrating or making decisions.

Alcoholism

  • Plan to take only one drink or to stop totally, but continues to drink until drunk.

  • Feels guilty about drinking, but has never really tried to stop.

  • Spends a lot of time figuring out how to get drunk.

  • Drunk at inappropriate times (work, school, family time).

  • Gives up hobbies and outside interests due to drinking.

  • Builds up a tolerance so has to drink more to get drunk.

  • Gets physically or emotionally ill when not drinking.

  • Begins drinking to relieve or avoid getting physically or emotionally ill.

  • Always arguing with relatives and friends about drinking.

  • Knows all of the above is happening and still keeps drinking.

Other Drug Dependence

  • Decides to use only one time or to stop, but then continues to use until loses control.

  • Feels guilty about using drugs, but has never tried to stop.

  • Spends a lot of time planning how to get and use drugs.

  • Under the influence of drugs during inappropriate times (work, school, family time).

  • Gives up hobbies and outside interests due to drug use.

  • Builds up a tolerance and has to use more of the drug of choice to get the same effect.

  • Gets physically or emotionally ill when not using.

  • Begins using to relieve or avoid getting physically or emotionally ill.

  • Always arguing with relatives and friends about drug use.

  • Knows all of the above is happening and still keeps using drugs.
